SensorX Solutions GmbH, a pioneering technology firm based in Obwalden, has secured six-figure financial backing under the National Research Programme (NRP), federal government’s research funding tool to support research projects. The funds will enable the startup to advance its platform for the measurement and monitoring of greenhouse gases.

Established in 2023, SensorX Solutions is focused on the development, manufacturing, and distribution of IoT sensors to detect and repair natural gas leaks – a major source of climate change. Methane, one of the main contributors to global warming, has a significantly stronger greenhouse effect per molecule than carbon dioxide (CO2). On April 10, 2024, the EU Parliament voted for stricter measures to curb methane emissions, introducing new requirements for the industrial sector, particularly in the areas of measurement, verification, and leak detection. This regulatory push, mirrored by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) in Switzerland, is driving demand for innovative solutions capable of meeting these new standards.

In response, SensorX Solutions has joined forces with Axetris AG and Peter Huber AG, an engineering company in the field of infrastructure and process automation, to develop an advanced solution that will set a new benchmark in the detection and quantification of methane. The innovative technology integrates cutting-edge gas detection from Axetris AG with efficient methods for quantifying leaks based on concentration measurements. Peter Huber AG will support the project with smart IoT solutions. This innovation will empower companies across Europe to comply with the upcoming regulations and significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Supported by Swiss innovation funds and the state of Obwalden under the NRP funding scheme, this initiative aims to revolutionize the way the energy industry monitors, detects, and quantifies leaks of harmful greenhouse gases, particularly methane. Part of the funding stems from the founders, and a minority contribution was made through Innocheque to support a GHG quantification algorithm development in collaboration with HSLU. In total, SensorX obtained a six-figure investment to accelerate the development and commercialization of their groundbreaking solution.

“Securing this support is a crucial step in our mission to combat climate change through innovative technology,” said Sanket Bhatia, CEO of SensorX Solutions. “With the backing of the Swiss government and our strategic partners, we are well-positioned to deliver a solution that will have a lasting impact on the energy industry and the environment.”
