MobiLysis has just secured the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) as its first customer in the USA. Presented a few days ago at the AI-X Summit in Zurich, the startup headed by Manos Barmpounakis has just flown its drones in 5 different large cities (Boston, Madrid, Athens, Geneva, Helsinki) in the last month and is generating a lot of interest. The company is on a mission to identify sources of congestion and mobility problems in cities.

MobiLysis is on a roll. Recently, this fast-growing EPFL spin-off had the opportunity to present itself at the AI-X summit in Zurich, and its drones flew to 5 different countries in less than a month, one of them being their first overseas customer.

MobiLysis' first customer in the USA is the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) in the USA. Contacted by Startupticker.ch, Manos Barmpounakis, CEO and co-founder of MobiLysis, explains: “They chose our solution because it was the only way to collect the specialized data they needed to study bike-vehicle interactions. Traditional methods couldn't provide the same level of accuracy and information, especially for such complex multimodal traffic environments. MobiLysis designed a complex experiment with a swarm of 5 drones collecting detailed trajectory data for vehicles and bicycles in high-risk areas in Boston. Access to this high-quality data, enables it to carry out high-quality R&D to improve road safety, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists.”

Founded in August 2022 as an EPFL spin-off of Urban Transport Systems Lab (LUTS), the company began operations in June 2023. MobiLysis offers an all-in-one service that helps cities optimize their traffic mobility management systems. The Vaud-based startup stands out for its holistic approach. The CEO explains: “We focus not only on cars, but also on vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as cyclists and pedestrians, because we understand the importance of sustainability in urban planning. Our data-driven solutions offer cities in-depth information to improve mobility, safety and environmental impact.”

Growing fast

MobiLysis already has a team of 6, and the next step for the startup is to hire a business development manager to help it continue to grow. While the team is focusing on expansion in the Swiss and European markets, it is also exploring opportunities for international expansion. To support these efforts, the CEO indicates that the company is actively seeking funding opportunities to accelerate its development, enhance its product offering and strengthen its team. These measures will enable the team to better serve cities and transport authorities with innovative traffic management solutions.
