The University of Fribourg is stepping up its support for innovative start-ups. To improve market readiness and fundability for its spin-offs, a new start-up grant focused on early-stage IP protection is being launched. As of September 15th, the new initiative will complement the proof-of-concept grants supporting the technological feasibility and economic viability of innovative ideas.

The University of Fribourg is stepping up its support for start-ups. To this end, the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Service is launching a new start-up grant to support the creation of start-ups by enabling them to protect intellectual property at an early stage and by granting favorable conditions for the licensing of technologies to start-ups created by researchers at the University. One to two projects each year will be eligible for the new grants of up to CHF 150,000.

From September 15th, members of the UniFR community (employees, students or continuing education trainees), or UniFR alumni who have a business start-up project, will have the opportunity to apply for this new grant. Fribourg University's spin-offs include start-ups such as Seprify, NanoLockin, LSinstruments and Neuria.

Improve market readiness and fundability

Contacted by Startupticker.ch, Valeria Mozzetti Rohrseitz, Head of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Service at the University of Fribourg, tells us that this new funding instrument aims to supplement the University's internal funding for projects in the start-up phase (proof-of-concept grants) with grants for projects in the advanced phase. Speaking of the new grant, Valeria Mozzetti Rohrseitz adds ‘While the proof-of-concept grants are designed to increase the chances of success for projects at an early stage, helping them to develop and access federal funding such as Bridge and Innosuisse, the start-up grant aims to increase the chances of success for our spin-offs that have already secured competitive federal funding. Our aim is to improve their market readiness and their ability to obtain venture capital funding."
