Tackling the complexities of confined space operations, the ETH spin-off RoBoa has designed a flexible, autonomous robot that reaches areas inaccessible to humans, collecting essential data to enhance safety and minimize downtime. With CHF 150,000 from Venture Kick, the startup is expanding its technology for new applications in industrial assessments and emergency response.

Inspecting confined spaces remains a major challenge across industries and rescue operations. Existing solutions, including rigid robots and drones, struggle with winding, sharp, or slippery environments, limiting their effectiveness in hazardous or inaccessible areas such as cluttered ducts. Traditional inspection methods are limited in reach, causing costly interruptions, while current robotic systems risk damaging delicate surfaces or failing to navigate complex pathways.

RoBoa overcomes these limitations with its unique growing-based locomotion, allowing it to maneuvre through tight, unpredictable spaces where no other robot or human can go. Its soft, pneumatic structure enables safe navigation over long distances, while its modular design adapts to various industrial and rescue applications. Unlike conventional systems, the ETH spin-off reaches deep into sewer and pipeline systems beyond push cameras and supports rescue missions by searching, localizing, and supplying disaster victims continuously tested alongside Swiss Rescue Troops.

With a total market size of USD 10 billion, RoBoa collaborates with asset owners and service providers to refine its solutions. The robotics startup will use the CHF 150,000 from Venture Kick to expand pilot testing with early customers, advance toward its first commercially available product, and grow its team.

Founded by ETH Zurich engineers Alexander Kübler, Betim Djambazi, Nicolas Aymon, and Pascal Auf der Maur, RoBoa combines expertise in robotics, automation, and industrial monitoring. The team ambitions to redefine how industrial and search and rescue operation can be supported with adapted robotic solutions.

“Venture Kick has been a key supporter in our transition from research to startup — challenging us to critically evaluate our business idea while offering expert support, vital early funding, and a highly motivating network,” highlighted Co-Founder Alexander Kübler.
