Based in Collonges (VS), the technology company MobyFly has set itself the mission of developing hydrogen or electric transport boats. These boats are equipped with foils to be able to ride above the water and gain in performance. Recently, MobyFly announced the conclusion of a contract for the construction of nine ecological boats with the Portuguese operator Nosso Tejo. An operation worth several tens of millions of francs.
Spread over 4 years, this agreement covers the pre-ordering of four 60-seat boats and five 300-seat boats. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in May 2022. "Our boats operate on the principle of lift, the same principle that allows an aircraft to take off. At a certain speed, the design of the foil creates a depression/overpressure that lifts part of the hull. Freed from water friction, the craft accelerates and reaches peak speeds of up to 70 km/h, a gain of 70% compared to a conventional fast ferry," explains Anders Bringdal, co-founder of MobyFly, to AGEFI.
Convincing customers and investors
Using lakes, rivers and seas for public transport and thus relieving congestion in cities is a risky bet, but Valais-based MobyFly has already signed six other orders with the Swiss, French, Japanese, American and New Zealand markets. It has also convinced investors. Furthermore, the Collonges company benefits from the support of European Community innovation funds and is currently organizing its second round of financing to support its growth.
